Northeastern University and Proteus Scientific a division of WGI, Inc., a Massachusetts-based leading manufacturer of precision parts and assemblies for aerospace, industrial and medical applications, have announced a breakthrough technology invented by a Northeastern University professor and his team intelligent portable devices for use in neurological research.

Comprehensive testing of this product has been documented with favorable and enthusiastic results in the scientific community.

The hand device is able to measure handgrip forces (dynamometer mode) and also to provide tunable and controllable forces during handgrip exercises (rehabilitation mode) inside an MRI scanner.  This device is intended to assist in the evaluation of changes in brain function and can give a quantitative assessment of mirror movements after stroke while in the MRI, e.g. during fMRI studies.  The targeted users of this one-degree of freedom (1DoF) device are individuals with neurological cortical disorders, such as stroke patients.
